Apotheosis (from Greek ἀποθέωσις from ἀποθεοῦν, apotheoun “to deify”; in Latin deificatio “making divine”; also called divinization and deification) is the glorification of a subject to divine level. The term has meanings in theology, where it refers to a belief, and in art, where it refers to a genre.
In theology, the term apotheosis refers to the idea that an individual has been raised to godlike stature. In art, the term refers to the treatment of any subject (a figure, group, locale, motif, convention or melody) in a particularly grand or exalted manner.
It also happens to be the name of the debut record by The Creep Void who hail from Washington / Gateshead in Northern England. The band offer up a nice mix of metal infused punk along with stripped down acoustic work outs. These seemingly incompatible elements make for an exciting record and point towards a very bright future for the band. The band is made up of Barry on vocals, Chris on guitar, Disco on bass, and Mark on drums. They’ve only been together since April of 2011 but they sound like they’ve played together for far longer than about 2 years. Shades of Mclusky and The Pixies but I also hear the doom of Black Sabbath in the guitar riffs. That’s a blend of influences that’ll make me listen – the way the band deftly makes it their own will having me hitting repeat.
the world becomes one (a bit about the tunes)
1st single Not For God’s Sake is an obvious highlight of the record with its aggressive start / stop tempo and melodic screaming. The rawness in Barry’s vocals is a welcome sonic delight. Fittingly one of the key lyrics screamed over and over is “Rock and Roll”. As Above, So Below reminds me of Ozzy era Black Sabbath music with vocals inspired by Ronnie James Dio era Black Sabbath. A match made in heaven, if you ask me (and you are reading this, aren’t you?). The chorus is truly haunting as the music slows down to a crawl and the song’s title is intertwined with lyrics about alchemy. Plethora features string backing and a guest female vocalist – it sounds unlike anything else on the record. The wordless sighs as the strings swell towards the end of the song is truly a magical moment. Butterflies Become Hurricanes closes the record out with an acoustic lament “I’ll stick around / if you insist”.
Gone are the days where a group of people could know about a band and withhold their secrets from general music fans (I think so, anyway). The Creep Void deserve to be discovered by music fans with an appreciation for rock n roll, metal, punk…well, anything guitar based really.
