Attack of the Killer Track! is a series that explores lesser known tracks from artists from a variety of genres. Some of the tracks were singles, some of them were obscure b-sides or long forgotten album tracks. One thing is certain – all of them are killer tracks.

This entry is a fairly recent single by Depeche Mode, but a single that wasn’t released in the United States and was their 2nd lowest charting single in the UK (released June 15 2009). I simply cannot fathom why a song that sounds like music for the masses was not a huge hit for the band. At this point in Depeche Mode’s career they typically wink and nod at their past while spinning the music and lyrics into a mix that betrays their vast life and musical experiences. (for a good time, play the video for “people are people” and follow it up with the video for “barrel of a gun”. Note the contrast). Sounds of the Universe was a strong record with some very high points and only a few songs that didn’t completely work (for me). “Peace” features positive, uplifting lyrics set against dark electronic music. David Gahan’s vocal performance is one of the best of his 30+ year career, and he becomes increasingly emotional as the song progresses. It is unclear if the protagonist of the video ever does find peace – but I know that when I need uplifting music to help combat the darkness this song has never let me down. Key lyrics:

Peace will come to me
Peace will come to me

I’m leaving bitterness behind
This time I’m cleaning up my mind
There is no space for the regrets
I will remember to forget
